Barro Bruñido (burnished clay) master José Luis Cortéz Hernández began his work in clay as a young teenager. In the 70s his study with the Great Master Salvador Vazquez commenced, working with him until 1985. He has won numerous awards in competitions throughout Mexico. As early as 1999 at the age of 22, he won the highly acclaimed first place award at the “Gran Premo de Arte Popular” held in Mexico City in the Barro Bruñido category. Since then he has achieved the most coveted awards in Barro Bruñido in the most distinquished state, regional and national competitions. From his simple to most elaborate works, his bold, refined, original creations have gained the appreciation of numerous folk art collectors. José Luis Cortéz Hernández is a true master of the Barro Bruñido art form.
His clay is from the Tonalá area; his paints are made using clay and earth pigments; his burnishing tools are river rocks and the metal pyrite.
