MARIO LOPEZ - Master Designer / Craftsman
Mario was born in 1952 in Mexico City. As a child he was interested in artistic techniques and at age thirteen he entered a children's school of fine arts at the Bellas Artes Institute. Later at age twenty he moved to Altepeje/Puebla to study the weaving techniques with reed (carizo) that originated in the Phillipines, and began to experiment with metal frames. |
In 1973 he visited the renowned artists Ana Pellicer and James Metcalf in Santa Clara de Cobre, Michoacán and became their student learning techniques of metalworking. Later, combining his metal expertise with the local, traditional craft of chuspata weaving, he installed his own artisan factory in the town of Ihuatzio, Michoacán on the shore of Lake Pátzcuaro. |
Chuspata is a variety of bullrush indigenous to Lake Patzcuaro that has been used for centuries in basketry. It is a vegetable fiber that grows in abundance on the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro. Mario, using metal framing to build forms, and new weaving techniques has taken the ancient craft to a new level. |
Mario’s factory has evolved, thanks to the help of enthusiastic friends and Mario’s innovative wicker, hand-woven reed furniture and animal art designs, into a thriving business with a worldwide clientele. Return to top.... |
