Mexican Art Collectibles
The art pieces showcased in The Art of Mexico Collectibles Gallery have been selected because they are truly authentic, exceptional works of Mexican folk art (the best-of-the-best-of-the-best) that are difficult, if not impossible, to find or duplicate. For example --

  • Items 1 thru 5 are authentic dance masks and costumes (trajes) that were created not as decorative pieces, but for specific dances and they have been worn by dancers in the fiestas. These items were purchased in the almost impassible, remote high Sierras of Guerrero where the language spoken is Nahuatl, not Spanish.
  • Items 6 and 7 are intricate paintings showing the work and the fiestas of Xalita, Guerrero by award-winning artist Pedro Hernandez.
  • Item 11 is an award-winning, truly remarkable "demon miniatura" by Orlando Orta, son of Juan Horta.

"ALCOHOLISMO" MINIATURE DEMON WOOD CARVING BY ORLANDO ORTA
This miniature demon wood carving was entirely carved from a single piece of Copalillo wood and painted with a lacquer paint. To achieve this level of perfection, 800 hours of extremely laborious work was invested in this piece of art.

This absolutely unique piece participated in the XLV Concurso Estatal de Artesanias "Domingo de Ramos" celebrated in Uruapan, Michoacan on March 20, 2005 . A certificate proves that this collector's item was awarded merit and recognition with a first place award.

MEANING: "ALCOHOLISMO" is represented by an alcohol consuming human skeleton immersed in the nightmares closely related to the horrendous experience of delirium tremens. The green monster, the dragon also represents the overpowering forces of the illness as well as the gastric acid that corrodes the digestive tube when the person refuses to eat and continues drinking. The snakes symbolize the catastrophic fall, dragging the victim into a bleak pit of loneliness and desperation. The devil is the ominous compilation of hideous behaviors such as violence, theft, murder, disintegration of the family and suicide -- calamities brought about by this horrendous disease.

The artist, Orlando Orta Ramos, resides in Tocuaro, Michoacan, Mexico. Tocuaro is located south of the lake of Patzcuaro.
