Mexico preserves
a lively masking tradition that can be traced back over 3000
years to pre-conquest Aztec shamanism. The Guerrero masks
showcased in the "Mascaras de Guerrero y Mas" gallery
are contemporary, folk art masks displaying two common themes
-- mockery of the Spanish Conquistadors and the morphing of
animal and man. A few decorative, novelty masks are also shown.
The proprietory mask-making technique and designs of the Martinez
family masks cause this collection to stand out as far superior
to others in this mask price category. Also
showcased are superb paintings on amate paper, wooden trays
(bateas), and a small selection of exceptional pottery pieces
created using the traditional, prehispanic clay techniques.
